The work.

Upgrade and modification of 382 locations along US 101 through Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, and Napa counties, including 112 CCTV cameras and 55 changeable message signs, plus traffic monitoring stations and variable message signs. Obsolete amber signs are replaced with color LED CMS panels. New computers and cellular comms at monitoring stations, new cameras and signal extenders, and 4 ft × 12 ft ground-mounted VMS for immediate advisories. Landscape work included clearing, erosion control, hydroseed, and hydromulch.

The benefit.

Drivers on the 101 get color graphics and clearer messages from 55 CMS units, plus live coverage from 112 cameras over a long stretch of the Bay Area and North Bay, including roadside advisories when something happens in front of them.
